Final Solution to Reinhard Heydrich

Today marks the 78th anniversary of the operation Anthropoid, i. e. code name for the assassination of the acting Reichsprotektor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich during the World War II.

One of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany and a very important figure in the "Final Solution to the Jewish question" in Europe, Heydrich was given the function of the Reichsprotektor of the rest of Czechoslovakia (Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. His brutal approach gave him the nickname - the Butcher of Prague and many others.

The Czechoslovaks then decided to take action and assasinate Heydrich. He used to drive with his driver in a car with open roof so the attack was plant to happen while he was in the car. The operation was carried out by soldiers of the Czechoslovak army-in-exile, in Prague, on 27 May 1942, after preparation and training by the British Special Operations Executive and with the approval of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. Wounded in the attack, Heydrich died of his injuries few days later.

This was the only government-sponsored assassination of a senior Nazi leader during the Second World War. His death led to a wave of reprisals by SS troops, including the destruction of villages and the mass killing of civilians. (Source: Wikipedia)
